If you have been following my recipes in my healthy eBook you will be aware by now that I don’t use cane sugar and all my recipes are refined sugar free. To substitute sugar I use natural sweeteners which are a better choice for your health, these natural sweeteners include rice malt syrup, maple syrup (100% of course), coconut nectar and raw honey.

So many of you are probably wondering why I use raw honey over regular honey? Honey is a better choice for you than sugar but did you know raw honey is an even better choice than regular honey? Raw honey has not been pasteurised which is a heating and filtration process to make it clear, meaning all the beneficial enzymes haven’t been lost. Raw honey is an alkaline-forming food that contains natural vitamins, enzymes, powerful antioxidants and other important natural nutrients. As it is unheated, it is generally cloudy in appearance.

Raw Honey Raw Honey 2
Raw honey is however more expensive than regular honey so if you do decide to use raw honey only use it when you are not going to bake or cook. Heating raw honey will still lose some of the beneficial enzymes.

There are lots of uses for raw honey, it’s a great alternative to cane sugar and some of my favourite ways to use it are to sweeten natural yoghurts, use in breakfasts, drizzle over healthy pancakes, add to smoothies and use in healthy treats and desserts.

Raw honey is generally located in the health food section at your local store (supermarket) and is generally not located where the regular honey and other spreads can be found. If your local store (supermarket) doesn’t stock raw honey you could always find it at your nearest health food shop.

So what are the health benefits of raw honey:
* It has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties.
* It promotes body and digestive health.
* It is a powerful antioxidant.
* It strengthens the immune system.
* It eliminates allergies.
* It is an excellent remedy for skin wounds and all types of infections.
* It can also stabilize blood pressure.
* It can balance sugar levels.
* It can relieve pain.
* It can calm nerves.
* It has been used to treat ulcers.

Raw honey is also an expectorant and anti-inflammatory and has been known to effectively treat respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and asthma.

Raw honey is also an effective natural remedy for a variety of conditions and for centuries it has been used to treat all sorts of illnesses. One of these examples is that raw honey’s antibiotic properties are effective in treating colds and sore throats as the raw honey coats the throat and reduces irritation. This was particular lovely to find in my research about the health benefits for raw honey as my mum would always make me a hot lemon and honey drink whenever I was sick as a child and still does now. She has even made this for my daughter who now asks me for this whenever she is sick.

So again this week I focus on a healthy ingredient and tell you about why it’s used for a healthy lifestyle, it’s uses, where to find it and it’s many health benefits. Why not make another simple, healthy change to your lifestyle and use raw honey instead of regular honey or refined sugar!
